CabinetI wanted a speaker cab to use with my amps and this is what happened... This side shows the first baffle I built out of 5/16" birch plywood. I used the same material for the strips around the outside. This is a common design to keep the grillcloth from vibrating against the grill. The speakers are mounted via T-nuts. Great system! Here's an interior shot showing two Heppner 12" AlNiCo speakers. Instead of fingerjointing the corners or getting fancy, I simply used some 2x2 pieces to brace the corners. The baffle is mounted "floating" style meaning it's fastened on only two sides. This is supposed to add to the overall resonance of the cab. That's 3/4" birch ply on the four sides which is really nice to work with. Glue and woodscrews were used to keep it together. Ain't it purdy! Here's the
completed cab with the 15" baffle out of the same 5/16" birch, aged BF-era
grillcloth, black tolex, and Fender-approved black strap handle. Applying
the tolex was a tough job but if you're patient the results can be
really professional looking.
Rear shot showing back panels and the 15" Eminence. Overall I'm very satisfied with the appearance of the cab but the tone isn't very impressive (harsh at higher volumes)...I think this is more than likely a function of the driver though. I might try securing the two sides of the baffle that are floating and see if the tone improves. Update! Nov 2001: I installed a WeberVST C15CA
California series 15" speaker and the tone is much improved. The Cali is
a more efficient driver and the cabinet is much more touch sensitive.
